چکیده

2014 A simple mechanical system consisting of a bouncing ball subject to repeated impacts with a vibrating table is studied in the period doubling regime. Two control parameters (the table’s forcing frequency and amplitude) are varied to discover the curves in parameter space that separate periodic orbits. Experimental results for the period doubling boundaries agree with calculations from a simple model. J. Physique 47 (1986) 1477-1482 SEPTEMBRE 1986, 1 Classification Physics Abstracts 02.30 03.20

Completely inelastic ball.

This Rapid Communication presents an analytical study of the bouncing of a completely inelastic ball on a vertically vibrated plate. The interplay of saddle-node and period-doubling bifurcations leads to an intricate structure of the bifurcation diagram with uncommon properties, such as an infinity of bifurcation cascades in a finite range of the control parameter Gamma. A pseudochaotic behavio...

Transversal stability of the bouncing ball on a concave surface.

A ball bouncing repeatedly on a vertically vibrating surface constitutes the famous "bouncing ball" problem, a nonlinear system used in the 1980s, and still in use nowadays, to illustrate the route to chaos by period doubling. In experiments, in order to avoid the ball escape that would be inevitable with a flat surface, a concave lens is often used to limit the horizontal motion. However, we o...

How Chaotic is the Stadium Billiard? A Semiclassical Analysis

The impression gained from the literature published to date is that the spectrum of the stadium billiard can be adequately described, semiclassically, by the Gutzwiller periodic orbit trace formula together with a modified treatment of the marginally stable family of bouncing ball orbits. I show that this belief is erroneous. The Gutzwiller trace formula is not applicable for the phase space dy...

The dialogue between data and model: Passive stability and relaxation behavior in a ball bouncing task

We investigate the skill of rhythmically bouncing a ball on a racket with a focus on the mathematical modeling of the stability of performance. As a first step we derive the deterministic ball bouncing map as a Poincaré section of a sinusoidally driven bouncing ball. Subsequently, we show the ball bouncing map to have a passively stable regime. More precisely, for negative racket acceleration a...

Passive vs. active control of rhythmic ball bouncing: the role of visual information.

The simple task of bouncing a ball on a racket offers a model system for studying how human actors exploit the physics and information of the environment to control their behavior. Previous work shows that people take advantage of a passively stable solution for ball bouncing but can also use perceptual information to actively stabilize bouncing. In this article, we investigate (a) active and p...
